I Designed the Best Travel American Mahjong Set for My Grandmother
I designed the Spools travel mahjong set because of my grandmother.
She's been playing mah jongg her whole life. A few years ago, carrying a traditional set became a real problem. A full American mahjong set weighs around fourteen pounds. That's a lot.
I'm a design engineer. I've spent my career working on spacecraft, aircraft, and consumer products like the iPad. So I started looking at travel sets.
Travel tiles are either too small to read, or too flat to build walls with. I wanted a set she could carry that didn't compromise gameplay, so I built one.
What's Wrong With Most Travel Mahjong Sets
Most travel sets solve the weight problem the same way: shrink everything down. The set gets lighter, but the game play mechanically changes.
I wanted to solve the actual problem, not trade one for another.
How Spools Travel Tiles Are Different
The tiles are bigger than standard, not smaller.
Spools tiles measure 1.4 x 1 x 0.4 inches, larger than the standard tile size of many major brands. Full-size. Easy to read. Easy to handle. When you sit down with a Spools set, you're playing the same game you always play.
They're lighter than most travel tiles.
This is the part that surprises people. The tiles are larger than standard, but lighter than many travel sets on the market. The tiles are partially hollow, which cuts weight dramatically and also means they float, without sacrificing the hard plastic feel or that satisfying click when you set one down.
The rack problem is actually solved.
I couldn't find a good rack solution anywhere in the travel mahjong market, so I designed one. Spools racks are 20 inches long, long enough for a full hand, and split in two for travel. They pack flat, reassemble in seconds, and are color-coordinated with the set. The pushers are lightweight too.
Everything fits in one bag.
The whole set, tiles, racks, pushers, dice, goes into a canvas tote. One bag, grab and go. Light enough to carry on a plane. Easy to pack in a suitcase. No separate cases, no figuring out how everything fits back together.
How It Compares to Other Travel Sets
Not all travel mahjong tiles are the same. Here's how the main options break down:
Tiny tiles: Small and portable, but can be hard to read. Great for tossing in a bag, but harder to build a wall with.
Flat tiles: Also portable and easy to read, but you can't build walls with them. That changes the game in a way most experienced players don't love.
Spools tiles: Full-size, easy to read, and portable. The tiles are larger than standard but lighter than most travel sets, so you don't have to give anything up.
Obsessed With Quality
I used to be a rocket scientist. That background doesn't leave you when you start making mahjong tiles.
Every Spools set is made using state-of-the-art machinery and a domestic supply chain. The tile design draws on the same engineering principles I applied to spacecraft: precision tolerances, material performance, and a refusal to ship something that isn't right.
We obsess over quality. Every side of every tile is inspected by a human, by hand, right here in the USA. Not spot-checked. Every side, every tile, every set.
If something's wrong with your set, we make it right. We offer free 14-day returns, no questions asked.
Who Made It and How
I'm Keen, the founder of Spools. I'm a design engineer with a background in aerospace and consumer electronics, and I started this brand because I wanted to solve a problem that mattered to my family.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size are Spools travel mahjong tiles? Spools tiles measure 1.4 x 1 x 0.4 inches, larger than the standard tile size of many major brands. They are designed to be easy to read and comfortable to handle, unlike most travel sets which use miniaturized tiles.
What are the tiles made out of? The tiles are made out of a hard plastic that still makes a great noise when you click them together. They are partially hollow to reduce weight and allow them to float, without changing the feel or sound of the game.
How many tiles come in a Spools set? Each Spools set includes 160 tiles: 144 base tiles, 10 jokers, and 6 blanks.
Is the Spools set compatible with the NMJL card? Yes. Spools sets are designed for American mah jongg and work with the NMJL card. You can browse the full Spools mahjong collection to find the right set for you.
How much does the Spools travel mahjong set weigh? The Spools set is significantly lighter than a traditional 14-pound American mahjong set, while using larger-than-standard tiles. The weight savings come from the partially hollow tile construction, not from shrinking the tiles down.
How do the racks work for travel? Spools racks are 20 inches long, long enough for a full hand of tiles, and split in two for travel. They pack flat and reassemble quickly. See the full Spools travel mahjong set for details.
Where is Spools made? Every tile, rack, and pusher is designed and printed right here in the USA. Every set is hand-inspected before it ships.
