Why Choose Lightweight Tiles?

Most sets make you choose: lightweight or full-size, easy to travel or nice to play at home. Spools tiles are both. Full-size and satisfying at the table, light enough to pack down for anywhere.

A travel set they can take anywhere. Most mahjong players already own a full-size set that lives at home. A lightweight set they can bring to the pool, the plane, or a friend's table is the gift they do not already have.

Lightweight tiles are incredibly versatile for both beginners and pros. The Compass Set by Spools is an excellent, incredibly easy to read set for beginners. Frequently, people have multiple nice standard sets but don't have a set that they love for travel. Lightweight tiles are perfect for gifts because they are delightful to play, but also different than what they may already have.

The best travel mahjong set stays full-size and readable while cutting the weight. Spools sets use full-size American tiles that weigh just 1.6 pounds together, float if they hit the water, and pack into a carry-on, so you get the real game without the bulk.

Yes. Every Spools tile set is a complete American mahjong set with all 160 tiles, including jokers and blanks, ready to play out of the box. The difference is the weight and the packability, not the game. Add racks and pushers to complete your table.

Lightweight tiles are full-size and satisfying to play, without the weight of a traditional set. The honest tradeoff is a slightly softer shuffle sound than heavy acrylic. In return you get a set that packs into a carry-on and floats. For travel, that trade is worth it.

Start with the tile set, then add the pieces that complete the table: travel racks, pushers, a zippered carrying tote, or a display case. A set plus racks and pushers makes a complete, ready-to-play gift instead of just the tiles.
