A Beautiful, Full-Size Mahjong Set You Can Travel With

Most travel mahjong sets are tiny, hard to read, or change how the game plays. Traditional full-size sets play well but weigh around 14 pounds. I wanted both: full-size tiles in a set you can carry. So I built the Spools travel mahjong set, a full-size American mahjong kit that weighs about 3 pounds and packs into one tote.

Designed for My Grandmother

My grandmother loves mahjong, but her traditional set had gotten too heavy for her to lift or bring to game nights. She needed:

• A set that wasn't heavy
• Tiles she could read clearly
• Colors she could tell apart easily
• One bag that held everything

What started as a family project turned into a six-month design process. I prototyped tiles, racks, pushers, artwork, and travel components one at a time until the whole thing played like a standard set.

What's in the Set

• 160 full-size tiles (1.4 x 1 x 0.4 inches): 144 base tiles, 10 jokers, and 6 blanks
• Four travel racks, 20 inches long, that split in two for packing
• Travel pushers that split the same way
• Four dice: two regular and two that float
• A tile bag and a color-coordinated tote that hold everything

Tiles, racks, pushers, and dice together weigh about 3 pounds. The tiles alone weigh about 1.6 pounds.

Full-Size Tiles, a Fraction of the Weight

To get the weight down, most travel sets shrink the tiles until they're either small or thin. I took the opposite approach. Spools tiles are full-size and partially hollow, which is where the weight savings come from. They stand up into proper walls, shuffle with a click, and float if they end up in the pool.

Easy to Read

The tiles use large, bold artwork, high-contrast symbols, and bright colors, with a smooth satin finish on the back. That makes them easier to read for beginners, older players, anyone with low vision, and anyone playing in dim or outdoor light.

Racks That Took 31 Tries

Travel racks are usually the first thing to break or bend, and traditional racks are too long to pack. I wanted racks sturdy enough for daily play that still fit in a bag, so I designed them to split cleanly in half and lock together when you're ready to play. It took 31 versions to get the fit, the angles, and the exposure area right.

The pushers took 14 versions. They needed to slide smoothly, lock tight, and push a straight wall.

Built for Travel, and the Pool

Everything packs into the tote with room to spare in a carry-on. The tiles float and so do two of the dice, so the set works on a cruise deck, at a resort pool, or in the backyard.

Compatible With NMJL American Mahjong

This is a complete American mahjong set built for the National Mah Jongg League card: bams, cracks, dots, winds, dragons, flowers, jokers, and blanks. It works at home, at clubs, in classes, and at tournaments.

3D Printed in the USA, in Small Batches

Every tile, rack, and pusher is designed by me and 3D printed in the USA in small batches. Every set is hand-inspected before it ships.
