So we made tiles that float.

How to Care for Floating Tiles

The tiles are made for water play, but a little care keeps them looking and playing their best for years. The tiles float, but they are not meant to soak, so a few simple habits go a long way:

• Rinse after chlorine or salt water. A quick freshwater rinse removes chlorine and salt so they do not build up on the tiles.
• Let them air dry. Lay them out and let them dry fully before packing up.
• Never store them wet. Putting tiles away damp is one thing to avoid. Dry them before storage, every time.
• Keep them out of direct sunlight for storage. Store the set somewhere out of prolonged direct sun.

Why We Made Them This Way

I started Spools because of my grandmother. She had played mahjong her whole life, and carrying a heavy traditional set became a real problem. I am a design engineer, so I built her a lighter one, and the partially hollow construction that solved the weight problem turned out to solve a second one too. The tiles float. What started as a way to make the game easier to carry became a way to play it in places you never could before.
