Why the Standard Set Becomes a Problem
Most traditional sets are heavy. Dense tiles, heavy racks, and a case add up to anywhere from 6.5 to 16 pounds. On the table at home, that's fine. The trouble is everything around the game: carrying it to the car, up the steps, into a friend's house, or across the clubhouse parking lot.
Mahjong is a social game. A set that stays home because it's a pain to move means fewer games.
The usual workaround is a mini travel set. That trades one problem for another. Small tiles are harder to read and harder to pick up, which is the opposite of what most players want as they get older.
What to Look For
- Light tiles. The tiles are the heaviest part of most sets. A full set of Spools tiles weighs about 1.6 pounds, less than a laptop.

- Bold, high-contrast markings. You should be able to read your rack and the discards without leaning in.
