How to Travel With Poker Chips

How to Travel With Poker Chips

Poker night travels well in theory. In practice, someone has to carry the chips, and a real set of poker chips is heavy. This guide covers how to travel with poker chips, how many you actually need, and how to pack them so they arrive in one piece.

Why poker chips are hard to travel with

A standard 200-chip set of clay or composite chips weighs around 4 pounds before you add the case. Most come in an aluminum briefcase that doesn't fit in a carry-on alongside anything else, and all in it can weigh 10-15 lbs or more!

Travel poker sets solve the weight problem by making the chips thin, small, or cheap plastic. They're light, but they slide around, don't stack cleanly, and feel like play money. Once you've shuffled a real chip, it's hard to go back.

That gap is why I designed Aero-Poker. I wanted a chip I could bring on a trip that still felt like a real chip at the table.

How Aero-Poker chips are made

Aero-Poker chips are full-size 40mm poker chips, the same diameter as a casino chip. They're partially hollow, which brings them down to about a fifth of the weight of a traditional chip. They still stack in neat columns, riffle-shuffle between your fingers, and make the right sound when you toss them into the pot.

Every chip is 3D printed in the USA.

How to pack poker chips for a trip

The 200-chip Aero-Poker set comes with 4 travel tubes. Each tube holds a stack of chips and slides into the side pocket of a backpack, a duffel, or a carry-on. You can split them up between bags or keep them together, and nothing rattles loose.

A few tips for packing:

  • Keep the cards in their box. A loose deck will find its way to the bottom of every bag.
  • Pack the tubes upright or on their side between soft clothes so they don't take hits.
  • If you're flying, put the chips in your carry-on. They're light and small, and you'll know where they are when you land.
  • Bring one extra deck.

If you're only bringing a few players, the 50-chip set comes in a magnetic box with a deck of cards and weighs about a pound. It fits in a jacket pocket or a backpack.

How many poker chips do you need?

For a casual game with 2-3 players, 50 chips will work. For a longer night or a group of up to 6, go with 200 chips so everyone has a full stack and you have room for rebuys.

The Rocket

We also make a poker set shaped like a rocket. The chips go inside, the nose cone is held on with magnets, and you pop it off to start the game. Each chip has a number on one side and a rocket on the other.

It started as a gift idea and turned into one of my favorite things we make. You can add up to 6 letters, and we print them on the rocket, the tubes, and every chip. The chips and tubes weigh 2 pounds together, so the rocket can stay home on the shelf while the chips go on the trip.

Personalize it

Every Aero-Poker set can be personalized with a name or initials. It makes a good gift for the person who hosts every game, or the one who always brings cards on vacation.
