As seen in: The Mahjong Tiles I made for my Grandmother went on National TV

Spools started with a problem. My grandmother couldn't carry her fourteen-pound mahjong set anymore. Every lighter option was either too small to read or too flimsy to build a wall with, so I designed one that didn't compromise: full-size tiles, a fraction of the weight, built to travel.

Here's where a travel mahjong set designed for one person ended up this year.

Good Morning America and Live with Kelly and Mark

Spools was featured in the deals segments on Good Morning America and Live with Kelly and Mark. A lot of the players who found us during those segments are still with us. Seeing a set I designed in a small studio show up on national morning television is still hard to describe.

Grazia USA

Grazia USA featured Spools in their editorial coverage. It was SO cool seeing Spools featured next to other big mahjong brands!

People Magazine

We also did a paid placement in People. Opening people magazine and seeing a photo I took of a set I made in my closet was so exciting.

Now carried at Anthropologie

Spools is currently available at Anthropologie. For a brand that started with one set for one grandmother, being carried by a retailer known for design and taste is the clearest signal yet that a lightweight, full-size, genuinely well-made travel game has a place beyond our own site.

What none of it changed

The tiles are still full-size. A set still weighs about 1.6 pounds, less than a laptop. They still float. And I still read every email that comes in. The features are nice, but the reason they happened is that the product does what it promises. That's the part I lose sleep over getting right!

If you found us through any of these, welcome. Pull up a chair. The tiles travel.
